Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Kansas City’s 101 The Fox!

Kansas City’s Classic Rock Station

On this day, 40 years ago, the legendary radio station hit the airwaves.

On October 14, 1985, 101 The Fox (KCFX) adopted its current "Fox" format, becoming one of the first Classic Rock stations in the entire nation and the first such station in a major market. KCFX originally only played Rock hits from the ‘70s, eventually expanding to hits from the ‘60s and ‘80s. More recently, 101 The Fox started playing memorable songs from the ‘90s and early ‘00s, including hits by Creed, Green Day, Metallica, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and others; The Times They Are A-Changin'…

Beginning with the 1990 NFL season, KCFX became the flagship station for our Kansas City Chiefs. This represented one of the first NFL broadcast agreements with an FM station, instead of a traditional AM radio station.

After 30 years, the station’s agreement with the Chiefs organization came to an end. The last game broadcast by KCFX was the team's victory in Super Bowl LIV.

Our Chiefs won their first Lamar Hunt Trophy on January 19, 2020.

On January 18, 2008, 101 The Fox’s longtime rival, KYYS, changed formats, spurring KCFX to change its slogan to "Kansas City's Only Classic Rock Station" for some time.

Several former KYYS radio personalities would ultimately join the on-air staff at 101 The Fox, including the late Brian “Slacker” Adams, Doug Medlock, Larry Moffitt, and Skid Roadie, who retired in 2021 after 23 years with the station.

101 The Fox continues to enjoy a large, loyal fan base (me included) and has held the second position in our market’s Nielsen Audio Ratings for 2025, trailing only its sister station, 94.9 KCMO.
