Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Krush Groove!

It’s Chillin’

This musical comedy-drama had its theatrical release on October 25, 1985.

Krush Groove is loosely based on the early days of Def Jam Recordings and up-and-coming record producer Russell Simmons (renamed Russell Walker in the film), portrayed by Blair Underwood in his feature film debut. Simmons was the film's co-producer and story consultant; he also had a cameo in the film as a club owner named Crocket.

Even though Krush Groove’s plot was somewhat fictional, the inclusion of the artists themselves created authenticity. The film captured the excitement of Hip-Hop’s early years. Krush Groove introduced us to the emerging rhythms and rhymes of Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, The Fat Boys, and LL Cool J. The film featured the legendary percussionist Sheila E., rapper Kurtis Blow, and a young Rick Rubin. Sheila E.’s rendition of Prince’s "A Love Bizarre" peaked at number 11 on the U.S. Hot 100 […and later appeared on my wife’s and my wedding reception playlist over two decades later!] Force M.D.’s provided the ballad that became “the slow song” for our middle school mixers and high school proms in late ‘85 and ‘86, “Tender Love”. The song was written and produced by the legendary duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
