Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Escape!

Thank you to the members of Whodini!

This breakthrough album was released on October 17, 1984.

This is the cover art for the album "Escape" by Whodini.

After being introduced to Hip-Hop over a year before, when I first heard the breakthrough instrumental “Rockit” by Herbie Hancock, my interest in the genre grew stronger in the Fall of 1984. I still recall a few of us sixth graders huddled around a shoebox tape player after lunch, taking in the foundational rhythms and rhymes of “Friends” and “Freaks Come Out at Night”; all so fresh and new to our ears. Escape was the first Hip-Hop album to chart within the U.S. Top 40.

That beat! And, the question we still often ponder…

The hook that won’t let go!
