Let Me Ride… Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the G-funk era!
Thank you Dr. Dre!
“Let Me Ride” was released as a single on September 13, 1993.
The song later won the Grammy Award for “Best Rap Solo Performance” in 1994.
Starting in the mid- ‘80s, the soundtrack of my teenage years was mostly an amalgamation of the Southern California music scene, where the sounds of the Sunset Strip later united with those of South Central, to create the ultimate mixtape; e.g., Motley Crue, Ratt, Guns ‘N Roses, Ice-T, N.W.A., C.M.W., and more…
After N.W.A., legendary producer and rapper Dr. Dre ushered in a new style of rap, especially in terms of musical style. His works, including his album “The Chronic” and “Doggystyle” by Snoop Dogg, also better aquatinted millions of us with the rhythmic and hypnotic sounds of 1970s Funk, particularly P-funk. According to historians, Hip-Hop itself was born a little over 50 years ago (August 11) in the Summer of ‘73.
Inspiration. Current artists are often influenced by past artists…
Earlier that year, the iconic artist and fellow former member of N.W.A., Ice Cube, also helped many of us discover (or rediscover) the sounds of yesteryear in his song “It Was a Good Day”. This memorable track was released as a single on February 23, 1993 and according to a 2016 interview, is his favorite among his own works.
Initially, Ice Cube went into the studio with a sample of the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps in the Dark". DJ Pooh later enhanced the production with bass and vocals. The rest is history…

“It’s impossible to imitate another artist’s point of view. We can only swim in the same waters… In the culture, there’s always a dialogue between the past, the present, and the future… As creators and enthusiasts, we share and receive points of view in order to participate in and further this exchange.”
