We can be heroes, just for one day…

Your mission, should you choose to accept it… Ten years ago, amidst the excitement of our Royals’ World Series championship run, our band was tapped to perform at the Superhero Costume Party, a fundraiser for Project Change’s “Mission Underpants”. “Mission Underpants” worked to fulfill the demand for new undergarments and socks for those less fortunate. Beneficiaries included Operation Breakthrough, Happy Bottoms, and reStart.

The fundraiser was held at the former Arts Asylum, which was located just east of Downtown Kansas City. The building was an old church that was repurposed and refurbished to serve as a performance venue and creative space.

We can be heroes, just for one day…

The event itself started off with KCPD officers instructing everyone to stay away from the front entrance, as unbeknownst to us, there was a disturbance across the street. We were given the “all clear” around 20 minutes later and everyone was finally able to enjoy their drinks and appetizers. Shortly afterwards, our band took to the stage for our first set. The building offered great acoustics, and the stage was rather large, with a great setup. Everyone was having a good time.

After performing our second set, it was time for the “superhero costume contest”, which quickly evolved into an impromptu “dance off”. A few of the female contestants took the competition to the next level by performing somersaults and jump splits on stage. After the winners were announced, everyone joined in for a few singalongs to close out the evening. All in all, it was a great night, with all proceeds going to a good cause. Mission accomplished!
